Nicole Drynan – Commonwealth Games baton relay
Nicole Drynan

Nicole Drynan (Year 7) has been selected to run a leg of the Commonwealth Games baton relay. She will be running on Friday March 30.

She was chosen due to her dedication to dance. In 2017 she was accepted into three dance companies. She also performed at QPAC and the Brisbane Convention Centre. Nicole trains for over twenty hours a week and also gives up much of her school holidays to her training.

This honour is due reward for her dedication and commitment. Well done Nicole!

Queensland Debating Union second round
QDU

The second round of the Queensland Debating Union commenced last night for our Year 9 and Year 11 teams. Both Year 9 teams secured narrow wins arguing the affirmative side of ‘That students should spend one day a week learning about trades’. The negative teams were both from boys’ schools – Marist College Ashgrove and Brisbane Boys College.

Our Year 11 team won against Somerville House arguing the affirmative side of ‘That local communities should be able to cap the number of tourists that enter their regions’.

Our students have embraced Point of Information debating (challenges can come from the opposing team while the speaker is delivering her/his material).

Our College Cross Country event took place this morning at Dorrington Park. Despite the early start, around two hundred students participated enthusiastically and displayed their school spirit.

Thank you to our staff and sports coaches who supported our students and facilitated a successful event.

Cross Country squad selection letters will be emailed to the top fifteen students per age group this afternoon.

The top three per age group will receive their pennants at our College Assembly next Thursday.

MSM Reads
Library.jpg

All students from Year 7–Year 10 participated in MSM Reads this morning during Period 1. The library hosted interested Year 9 & 10 students at our inaugural Book Tasting event.

The tables were set up like a restaurant and every five minutes the students moved on to a different course. Over the period, they “tasted” mystery, science fiction, dystopian, romance, relationship and fantasy genres. The students were very enthusiastic and excited to be introduced to books that they may never have picked up to try before. It was a wonderful success with all those involved borrowing out many new titles and asking when we would be hosting another event.

Health and Physical Education Day

Health & Physical Education Day was celebrated this year with a Staff versus Student dodgeball game. Both teams were very competitive, with the student team (Year 12PE class) winning 3-1. All money raised was donated to Caritas. Staff are looking forward to the re-match.

Year 8s launch their 2018 Theme

On Friday 16 March, the Year 8s launched their 2018 theme in the Sophia Centre. This was expertly lead by the hard-working Year 8 Semester 1 Home Room Captains who created a series of role-plays exploring how we can strengthen a sense of unity and community amongst the Year 8 cohort.

Below is an extract written by Year 8 student Annabel Coleman who led a reflection on how Year 8 intend to live out their theme of compassion, empathy and hope.

This year we are striving to all have colossal, flickering flames of love. The only way to achieve this is to share our love and illuminate others’ light. Just by making small acts of support and kindness to the candles who have a faint flame, we can help those who feel displaced and fill them with love. This year’s theme is about helping others, but it is also about recognising and appreciating when someone shares their flame with you.
