Welcome from the Principal
Mt St Michael’s College is a Catholic College for young women in Years 8 to 12. Students educated at the College are nurtured in the tradition of the Sisters of Charity to be principled young women with a passion for life, a commitment to justice and the courage to live out the teachings of Jesus. As a learning community we strive for excellence with continuous improvement. What do our students value about our school? In their words: our unique community and the quality of relationships which we foster; our spirit and pride; our school is a place where we can be ourselves and express who we are; our diversity, there is something here for everyone; our mission, the way we reach out and show compassion for others; our focus on learning and commitment to excellence; our sense of empowerment and capacity to be change agents.
A long held dream to enhance the College building facilities has begun to come true with the operational opening of Phase 1 of our building program – the Ionian Centre. This centre for Music, Mathematics, Science which also incorporates an 180 seat auditorium for the Performing Arts and two new tennis courts will significantly enhance our College facilities and our students learning opportunities.
Students and guests of the College have been overwhelmed by the features of our new learning facility: the foyer and mezzanine level with natural light streaming in; the rich auditorium space with the opportunities it provides for professional, contemporary and innovative learning; the symbolism of Alpha and Omega which acknowledge for us, as a Christian community, that Christ is the beginning and end of everything; wonderful spacious music facilities; a stunning Senior Study and our innovative, spacious and practical Science laboratories on the upper floor.
The name of the Centre acknowledges our spiritual and religious heritage with an emphasis on excellence in learning; in religion and philosophy, science, mathematics and music. In our naming we have interwoven a number of concepts:
- The island of Iona off Scotland is a spiritual home of Christianity; a sacred place of learning, prayer and pilgrimage;
- In classical antiquity, Ionia in Greece was considered the birthplace of science and mathematics and it was here that the Ionian scale, the most common scale in music, was developed.
Our new Aquatic Centre is now being enjoyed by students and staff. We are moving from a 20 metre, four lane swimming pool to a 25 metre, six lane centre which will enhance our facilities for our swimming and water polo programmes.
With these new facilities Mt St Michael’s is taking another giant leap forward into the educational future. We have a community of dedicated staff committed to achieving the very best with all of our young women. As a College we are very proud of our students and our mission as an education community is to produce women of: Compassion, Conscience, Commitment, Competence and Confidence.
