Our Facilities

Mt St Michael’s College offers well-appointed facilities, which are integral in retaining committed teachers and achieving good health and engaged learning within the student body. As pedagogy evolves, the needs of students and teachers evolve too and as such Mt St Michael’s is dedicated to continually improving the school’s teaching and learning experience.

Mt St Michael’s College is located in Ashgrove, six kilometres to the northwest of the Brisbane CBD.

Nestled in beautiful garden surrounds, the buildings are shaped by quality environmental planning and care. The College offers excellent facilities including: modern general learning classrooms; specialist learning areas; the multipurpose Sophia Centre; Library; Ionian Centre incorporating an auditorium; music facilities; state-of-the-art Science laboratories; the Mary Aikenhead Centre for Spirituality, Justice and Mission; the Arts Precinct; the Innovation Centre; and the Wellbeing Centre.

A summary of all our existing facilities is below. We are also planning a new Learning Centre.

PROPOSED NEW LEARNING CENTRE

The College has established a masterplan in collaboration with architects, teachers, parents and students to guide continuous improvement in our campus facilities.

The College is planning a new, three-storey Learning Centre with integrated landscaping, fronting Amarina Avenue. This new Learning Centre will provide a centralised administration function, a range of flexible learning areas and a new library. It would enable the College’s heritage-listed Grantuly (current used for administration) to be used in better alignment with the College’s mission.

We are currently engaging with the community about this project and encourage you to learn more by viewing our project consultation posters here.

Current Facilities

Grantuly Administration

The original homestead, completed in 1899, has been renovated to create a balance between its beautiful heritage architectural style with a contemporary and welcoming reception. The building is now the centre for the College Leadership team and the business and administration operations of the College. Public and parent entry is from the circular courtyard with student entry from the inner courtyard.

Wellbeing Centre

The Mt St Michael’s College Wellbeing Centre for students was officially opened on Mary Aikenhead Day in 2019. Located on the ground floor of M Block, The Wellbeing Centre provides an inviting space for our students and is home to our Pastoral Leaders, College Psychologists and Program Leader – Career Pathways. We thank our parent body for their generous donation to the College Building Fund which fully funded this project.

Innovation Centre

The Innovation Centre now provides students a central hub for an array of activities and is residence for the Curriculum Leader – Diversity and Differentiation, our Teacher Assistants and support staff. Our current Innovation Centre has served us well since undergoing renovations in 2019. However, at this stage in the College’s evolution, we are proposing to replace the current Innovation Centre with a new, contemporary Learning Centre.

Arts Precinct

'The Arts not only serve our aesthetic and expressive needs but also a spiritual function. They are the vital way that the image of God is made relevant in our times.' David Tacey.

Blessed by Father Peter Brannelly, our Arts Precinct was opened in February 2016 by Dr Tessa Ho, Mary Aikenhead Ministries Trustee, in conjuction with a special Liturgy. Messages of ‘the beauty of creation’ and ‘appreciation of creation’ were shared and our Art students have enjoyed calling this modernised space ‘home’ ever since’.

As a community, we continually reflect upon the importance of the Arts in lifelong learning and how integral the Arts are in building the whole person. Throughout the day, the Arts Precinct is a hive of activity, providing additional garden space and an ideal spot for our students to relax during break.

Mary Aikenhead Centre

The Mary Aikenhead Centre for Spirituality, Mission and Justice, named after our Foundress, celebrates the history and tradition of the Sisters of Charity in their journey from Ireland to Mt St Michael’s College, Ashgrove. With the Chapel, reflection pool and meditation area it is a sacred space. The College Marketing Communications and Development office is situated on the top floor, alongside a meeting room which can be booked and utilised by various community groups.

Sophia Centre

The Sophia Centre is a multipurpose hall utilised for major College events, celebrations and assemblies and is equipped with full audio visual facilities. The Sophia Centre has the capacity to provide seating for all students and staff. Throughout the day the centre is utilised for classes in Health and Physical Education and Dance and Drama.

Aquatic Centre

Opened in 2011 and built on the site of the original College pool, the Aquatic Centre comprises a multi-purpose pool, for the most part 2m in depth and shallowing to 1.4m at one end to allow for HPE activities. The pool is primarily used for water polo and is also heavily utilised for swimming training and HPE.

Ionian Centre

Completed in 2011 the Ionian Centre is an excellent contemporary learning facility servicing multiple curriculum areas. The Auditorium and foyer areas provide a wonderful space for showcasing student art work, music performance and hospitality for College functions. Access is generally through the Grantuly reception areas.

Miryam Centre

The Miryam Centre wraps around the inner courtyard which is at the heart of the College. M Block comprises three levels with facilities for the Resource Centre, general learning areas for Middle schooling (Year 7 to Year 9), the Wellbeing Centre and the ICT student services and learning areas.

Killindarbin

Killindarbin is the name entrusted by the Turrbal people, the traditional owners of this land, for this building.
Opened in 1998 it is a centre for learning in Mathematics on the top floor with Food and Design Technology facilities located on the ground floor adjacent to the inner courtyard. This building links in seamlessly with the Ionian Centre.

Multi-purpose Courts

Our two external courts situated between the Ionain Centre and the Mary Aikenhead Centre are multi-purpose courts opened in 2011. They cater for:

  • Tennis
  • Basketball
  • Netball
  • HPE Activities

The Kaf

Located on the ground floor of Killindarbin, the College canteen 'The Kaf' is operated by an external company Alliance Catering and provides a healthy option brekkie menu (from 7:30am) and lunch menu.

Uniform Shop

The MSM Uniform Shop is conveniently located in the main courtyard beside the Wellbeing Centre. Families are encouraged to make use of this onsite facility as the official supplier, as the College benefits directly from all purchases made.
