Orientation Guide

Year 7, 2024

Welcome to Mt St Michael's College!

Welcome

We are delighted that you have chosen MSM for your daughter and that your family is joining our community. Leading up to your daughter’s commencement at the College, please continue to review this Orientation Guide for information to help your daughter in this transition phase.

What to expect on your daughter's first day at MSM
  • School starts at 8:30 a.m. and is a full school day concluding at 3:00 p.m.
  • Students are required to wear their formal College uniform.
  • On arrival your daughter should consult the lists located in M Block which will inform her of her Homeroom classroom and teacher. Please arrive earlier to allow your daughter sufficient time to do this.
  • Along with Mrs Devenish-Meares (Year 7 Pastoral Leader) and Homeroom teachers our Year 12 student leaders will be around M block to welcome and assist you.
  • Your daughter is to then go to her Homeroom where she will receive instructions from her Homeroom Teacher.
  • Your daughter will not need her folders and books on the first day. She should bring them in on the second day, Wednesday 24 January, once she is aware of her locker allocation. On Wednesday she will receive her timetable and spend some time organising her books, folders, and locker. For the first day she only requires a pencil case, morning tea/lunch and a water bottle.
  • On their first day, students may bring their own lunch or alternatively, they may purchase their morning tea and lunch from The Kaf.
  • The Library will be open before and after school. Term time opening hours are 7:30am to 4:30pm Monday to Thursday and 4:00pm on Friday.
During day one, students will be issued with the following items:
  • 2024 College Diary - The College Diary is your student's handbook to MSM and contains all the information they need to know about the College, expectations and how education at MSM operates.
  • 2024 College Calendar
  • Student timetable
  • Lock for their locker

The College App

The College app is the hub of information for the College and provides access to Parent Lounge.

It is important that you subscribe to your daughters year level and the areas of interest/activities that they are involved in. This should be updated at the start of every school year to ensure information is specific for your family. Lastly, don't forget to nominate to receive push notifications to stay alert to updates. Eg. Sport trials, cancellations, The Arts practice information, events and submitting student absences.

Guide to Downloading and Using the College App

Download available from The App Store Google Play

To manage your subscriptions:

  • Go to Settings (via the ‘cog like’ symbol found at the bottom right of your home screen)
  • Select Subscriptions

The Kaf and Flexischools

The Kaf is the College café and operates on a daily basis during the academic year for breakfast, morning tea and lunch.

The provision of contemporary food and drinks that are fresh and of high quality for our students, staff and guests is at the core of the operation.

For the current Kaf menu please CLICK HERE

Payments at The Kaf are made only by the cashless system Flexischools. This enables parents to order online using the free Flexischools app and transfer and manage funds from their bank account directly to their Flexischool account.

Online orders can be placed for morning tea and lunch up to 8.30am on the morning required.

Tips For Setting Up Your Flexischools Account

Setting up an account for either Online Ordering or Card Payments is done online via www.flexischools.com.au and click Register Now. You will be then sent an email from Flexischools with further instructions on how to complete the registration.

Please note: Your student’s “Alternate ID” is not the number on their Student ID Card. To access their Alternate ID go to:

  • Parent Lounge
  • Student Details
  • General Details - the number will appear in the Alternate ID field.

If you have more than one student enrolled, select the student from the drop-down option on the right and follow the steps above.

An ID Card can only be registered to one Flexischools account.

If an ID card becomes lost or misplaced, please call Flexischools on 1300 361 769 as soon as possible to place a hold on the account.

Replacement ID cards can be purchased via the MSM IT Support office for $8 each

Contact FlexiSchools via 1300 361 769.

Mobile Phones and Smart Watches

Mobile phones and smart watches must be placed in lockers at 8.30am prior to Homeroom and remain in there during school hours. Phones and smart watches must not be taken to classes or carried around in pockets/bags.

If a phone or smart watch is required for medical or educational purposes approval must be given and a pass granted by the College.

Leave from College

Students are expected to attend school every day during term time. For your future information, please note the College policy in relation to student absences, schoolwork and assessments due to vacations.

Attendance at school is crucial for your daughter’s development. Please keep this in mind when organising family holidays. If for any reason your daughter is required to be absent from school for a period of time, other than medical or dental appointments, our policy states that you write to the Principal requesting leave for your daughter prior to arrangements being made. When requesting leave, please include your daughter’s full name, year level and homeroom in the letter.

It is important to note, request for leave from the Principal is only for extended periods of absence, and not for short periods of absence such as medical appointments or sport representation.

Please refer to the Administration section of the student diary for further information regarding student absences.

Fees

Fees are charged each term and are payable within 14 days of the date of issue. Strict adherence to payment is expected and extensions will only be granted in exceptional circumstances. Retreats and levies will be charged through term accounts. Payments may be made by Credit Card, Cheque or Direct Debit.

Transport

If your daughter will be using public transport services it may be beneficial to take your daughter on a practice run during the holidays so that she is aware of the schedule and requirements.

Bus information on services can be obtained through

TRANSLINK on 131 230 or School service finder | Translink and on the Brisbane Bus Lines website Brisbane Bus Lines - Mt St Michael's College.

Detailed information on bus routes and timetables is available through Ward Offices and Municipal Libraries.

MSM Sport

Mt St Michael’s College provides an all-inclusive, safe environment for girls of all skills and abilities across a wide range of sporting options. We want girls to become lifelong participants of sport and our aim is to provide the opportunity for them to represent Mt St Michael’s College against other Catholic Secondary Schoolgirls’ Sports Association (CaSSSA) Schools in a competitive environment.

We also believe it is vitally important for girls to be able to participate in physical activity without the pressure of competition, therefore we are constantly sourcing new opportunities for social and non-competitive involvement in a wide range of physically active programs.

We firmly believe sport is for every girl and strive to achieve high participation and enjoyment for all students across all programs on offer at Mt St Michael’s College. Our goal is to offer relevant pathways for all levels of physical activity, ranging from students competing in sports at elite levels and students trying a new sport for the first time.

We encourage our students to “run like a girl, throw like a girl and kick like girl” and be proud of what they can achieve by having a go! We promote girls that are committed, hardworking and strong individuals who will continue to enjoy the active lifestyle during their time at Mt St Michael’s College and long after they have graduated!

All communication about co-curricular activities will be made with your daughter on her email once she has received her laptop. We encourage all communication to be directly with the student in order for her to develop the commitment and organisation required to be involved in an activity.

In Week 1 a timetable of offerings will be posted on the app and sent to all students. Teachers in charge of the activities will discuss the offerings with Year 7 students in their first week.

At the end of Week 1, an email with a link to an online form will be sent to students requesting expressions of interest for the respective activities. Students will then receive an email with the details which they can share with you. Instructions will be clearly given for the student to do this.
