Co-Curricular sport is an extension of the College curriculum and pastoral programs

Co-Curricular sport is an extension of the College curriculum and pastoral programs. Our sporting teams aim to foster the many positive values that participation in sport and games offer.

Emphasis is placed on co-operation, teamwork and team spirit. We aim to promote excellence through quality coaching and competition. Participation in the sports program offers a valuable co-curricular outlet for students, developing positive relationships between students, coaches, staff and parents.

Aerobics

The College Sport Aerobics team competes in Gymnastic Queensland Aeroskools competitions throughout the year with success at both State and National competitions. Mt St Michael’s College has been the largest represented club at National Championships over the past few years.

Sport Aerobics involves performing agile movement patterns to heart pounding music and is the perfect sport for active people with energy to burn. Sport Aerobics provides the following benefits:

  • develops agility, co-ordination and self confidence
  • builds strength and flexibility, preparing the body for life’s challenges
  • is modern, fast paced and intense
  • is exciting, creative and aesthetically pleasing to watch
  • develops aerobic endurance within fun and entertaining environments

AFL

The College competes in the CaSSSA AFL competition played on Wednesday afternoons in Trimester 1.  AFL Queensland manage the CaSSSA AFL competition, a 9-a-side modified version of AFL for females and provide qualified umpires. Teams are offered for all year levels. Games are played at central venues commencing at 4.00pm.  No games are played during school holidays.

The College enters teams in other AFL Queensland competitions throughout the year.

Training

Training is at Dorrington Park, however times and days are dependent on coach availability. There is no training during school holidays or on public holidays.

Uniform and Equipment

The uniform is the School PE uniform and school sports cap. Teams will be loaned an AFL jersey for the season. All playing equipment is provided.

Students are transported to the game venue and back to the College.

Athletics

The College competes in the Catholic Secondary Schoolgirls’ Sports Association (CaSSSA) Athletics Carnival, the CaSSSA Athletics Cup, in August of each year.

The College has built a respected reputation in the Interschool CaSSSA Sporting competitions, Swimming, Athletics and Cross Country which are nurtured and developed by dedicated, professional coaches.

Our Athletics and cross country programs are coached by high profile coach, Eric Brown. For more than 40 years Mr Brown has followed his passion for coaching track and field events to athletes from beginner to elite level and continues to produce state, national, and international level athletes in all track and field events.

Cross Country

The College competes in the Catholic Secondary Schoolgirls’ Sports Association (CaSSSA) Cross Country Cup, in late May of each year.

Cross Country is an excellent team sport in which all students are encouraged to participate not only to be part of the Cross Country team but also for fitness, fun and to develop a strong fitness base for all other College sports.

A Cross Country Team is selected on completion of the College Cross Country Carnival held late in Term 1 or early in Term 2.

The Cross County season also includes a number of lead up meets where students gain valuable race practice and a Cross Country team camp on the Gold Coast in May.

Coaches

The College is proud to have Mr Eric Brown (Level 5 Multi Events Athletics Coach) as Head Coach of the Cross Country program. Eric has coached numerous medalists at State and National level each year.

Training

Commences early February each year: Tuesday and Thursday 6:30-7:45am & 3:30-4:45pm starting from the College Sophia Centre.

Equestrian

The College Equestrian program caters for horse owners.

The Equestrian Team is part of the Queensland Inter-School Equestrian Association Inc and competes at various events. This team is restricted to horse owners who wish to compete in dressage, show jumping and showmanship.

Equestrian Team

The Equestrian Team is open for all students who have horses and wish to take part in competitive classes against other schools. Students who wish to join this team will be required to pay membership and joining fees.

Hockey

The College competes in the CaSSSA Hockey competition played on Wednesday afternoons. Games are played during Trimester 2. All games are played at a central venue, Brisbane Women’s Hockey Club, Downey Park, with teams offered for all year levels.

Games commence at 4.00pm and conclude by 5.00pm. No games are played during school holidays.

Training is on Monday’s from 3.30-4.30pm @ Dorrington Park, however times and days are dependent on coach availability. There is no training during school holidays or on public holidays.

The College competes in the CaSSSA Netball competition played on Wednesday afternoons. Games are played during Trimester 2 for Open and Intermediate teams and Trimester 3 for Junior teams.    Games are played at a central venues; Downey Park, Newmarket and Faulkner Park, Graceville, with teams. Teams offered for all year levels. Games commence at 4.00pm and conclude by 5.00pm. No games are played during holidays.

The College also competes in the annual Queensland Catholic (QC) Netball Cup and Vicki Wilson Cup each year.

Training is held before or after school with times/days dependent on coach availability.  There is no training during school holidays or on public holidays.

The College competes in the CaSSSA Soccer competition played on Wednesday afternoons on a home and away basis. Games are played during Trimester 2. Home games are played at Mitchelton Soccer Club, Teralba Park, Osborne Road, Mitchelton.

Swimming

Our Swim Coaches, Jonathon Ellis and Sean Williams are renowned coaches within 'Club land', managing their own swimming squads and swim schools. Our swimming program has unveiled our three-year plan to success which can be delivered and maintained to taking home first place at CaSSSA Cup.

Tennis

The College competes in the CaSSSA Tennis competition played on Saturdays from February to May each year. Tennis is available to all year levels and is regarded as a life-long sport, catering for all skill levels. Students are also offered the opportunity to be involved in tennis lessons through the College coaches, Lifetime Tennis.

Teams & Fixtures

Games are played on Saturday mornings for Junior grades, and Saturday mid-morning / afternoon for Open and Intermediate grades. Any student with a strong tennis ability may be given the opportunity to try out for a higher grade if they wish. Games are played on a home and away basis with home games played at the College Tennis Courts.

Training

Each team has one weekly training session before school on a Monday, Wednesday or Friday morning.

Water Polo

The College competes in the Brisbane Water Polo (BWPI) competition. Games are played on Saturdays commencing in Term 4 and concluding late in Term 1. Games are played at the Valley Pool, Somerville Aquatic Centre or St Rita’s College Pool. No games are played during school holidays.

Training

Students are expected to attend one weekly water polo training session and one swimming training session during the Water Polo season.
